Teeth Whitening

Naturally bright white teeth are something almost everyone would like to achieve. The pristine hue that you often see in celebrities is not necessarily a realistic goal even with good oral maintenance, however. While brushing your teeth and flossing it regularly helps to maintain good oral hygiene it isn’t enough to keep them white and free from the yellowish tinge that tends to develop. A professional whitening treatment is often required to keep your teeth bright white. If you have noticed that your teeth are a bit more discolored than you’d like and you’d like to whiten them, we highly recommend getting yourself a dental whitening session by visiting our office at Henricksen Family Dental.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves removing stains from your teeth. This is generally done in a single session after your teeth and gums have been thoroughly examined to make sure they are healthy enough for the process. It can take an hour or two for the treatment to be completed, so make sure that you block out enough time in your schedule. You’ll also likely be resting and unable to speak or do much as the light and gel work their magic, so plan on bringing earbuds and your phone to keep yourself occupied.

Note that over-the-counter (OTC) whitening kits are not recommended - they can cause more harm to your teeth than good. One of their major problems is that they destroy the enamel of your teeth and lead to tooth sensitivity as well as an increased risk of other dental issues. Having your teeth whitening done by professionals is not as extensive as you might imagine it to be and the results will be much better than anything you could achieve with an OTC kit.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

White teeth help to boost your confidence and make you feel more at ease when speaking or smiling, but is everyone a good candidate for the whitening process? The answer can be complicated. In general, teeth whitening is not an overly rigorous procedure that places your teeth under great distress. With that said, healthy teeth and gums are essential to ensure that no unexpected damage or mishaps occur. If you are currently struggling with dental or periodontal issues, you should speak with a dentist to determine how best to move forward. It might be necessary to wait until after the health of your teeth and gums has been restored.

Getting your teeth whitened not only helps to improve their appearance but can also help us detect dental issues at an earlier stage via the thorough examination you receive before and after the procedure. A good dental whitening session should last you at least a couple of months and will help you flash a flawless smile without feeling self-conscious every time you smile.
