Fluoridated Water Benefits

Posted on 3/21/2022 by Henricksen Family Dental
Fluoridated Water BenefitsRegular brushing and dental visits are key to maintaining a healthy mouth. But what about the water you drink? Fluoridated water has been available across the U.S. for 75 years, and the benefits to dental health are well documented. A fluoridated water system reduces cavities by about 25%, and by doing so, dental costs are lowered for individuals and families. People of all ages continue to suffer from cavities, so having access to fluoridated water seems like a no-brainer. To promote oral health for all, we must understand fluoridated water and its benefits. This will allow us to continue working to ensure that everyone is given a fair chance to have a healthy mouth.

What is Water Fluoridation?

Water contains some amount of fluoride naturally, but sometimes it's too little to do much for dental health. Defining water fluoridation as the simple act of balancing fluoride levels to strengthen teeth. It is recommended to use 0.7 milligrams per liter of water. By providing low-level streams of fluoride throughout the day, it bonds with weakened enamel to prevent decay.

Why It Is Beneficial

All ages can benefit from its oral and overall effects. Fluoride has been shown to reduce decay by at least 25% across all ages - and that's in addition to its prevention properties found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and fluoride varnish. It can be particularly important for populations at higher risk for decay, such as children and the elderly. Dental health affects so many aspects of human life, as we all know. Tooth decay, cavities, and other oral issues can make us uncomfortable, and change our appearance in an embarrassing way. Left untreated, these issues can result in the loss of teeth, the need for costly procedures, and even some types of cancer. Our overall health can be greatly improved by getting adequate fluoride intake throughout our lives. Fluoride is a natural substance. Nature's cavity fighter, fluoride can be found in virtually all water supplies, whether fresh or salt. Some sources of water contain trace amounts of fluoride, not enough to protect our teeth. As a result of community water fluoridation, a balanced amount of fluoride is added to the water, strengthening, and preventing dental decay. The practice is both cost-efficient and worthwhile. Water fluoridation is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent tooth decay and reduce dental expenses in all communities, according to research. In fact, the lifetime cost is less than a single filling.
