Can a Cracked Tooth Be Left?

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Henricksen Family Dental
Can a Cracked Tooth Be Left?A broken tooth is a cracked tooth. The crack can be on the biting surface, or just in the outer enamel, or you may have a fully split tooth. If you get a cracked tooth you have two options. You can leave it alone and hope for the best, or you can have our staff take a look at it to see if you need some treatment.

In our experience, most patients experience discomfort with a cracked tooth. We have seen that the discomfort only tends to worsen with time. Furthermore, a cracked tooth can easily incur further damage as you chew on it or even around it. Cracked teeth tend to decay faster than normal and can split vertically. They do not have the enamel to protect it and bacteria can penetrate the inside of the tooth and break it down.

Cracked Teeth Can Worsen

Whether you choose to leave your cracked tooth alone or not, it is a good idea to come into our office so we can take a look at the extent of the damage. For instance, if the crack is only on the surface, we may advise you to leave it alone. If the cracked tooth has extensive damage, we can advise you on the restoration method. Commonly, we restore a cracked tooth using dental bonding. This cosmetic dentistry practice helps to alleviate the pain and seal up the tooth.

If you suspect you have a cracked tooth, or a toothache you cannot explain, it is a good idea to consult with us so we can help you determine your next step. We want to help prevent bigger problems, like tooth decay and your tooth splitting vertically, and help you to feel better. Stop into our office or give us a call and we will be happy to work you into our schedule as soon as possible. You do not have to suffer long with a cracked tooth.
