When Does Your Toothbrush Need to be Cleaned?

Posted on 11/9/2020 by Henricksen Family Dental
When Does Your Toothbrush Need to be Cleaned? The ADA recommends that our patients replace their toothbrushes every three to four months, and that our patients use only soft-bristled toothbrushes to prevent tooth and mouth injuries due to abrasion. However, toothbrushes should be cleaned far more frequently. Our team recommends that our patients clean their toothbrushes before each use to minimize the risk of exposing their mouths to harmful bacteria.

Drawbacks of Using a Toothbrush That is Not Properly Cleaned

Rinsing the head of a toothbrush with cold water – or even warm water – is not sufficient to clean it. The toothbrush will still have particles of toothpaste as well as bacteria from the patient's mouth. If the patient's hands are not sufficiently clean, then bacteria from the patient's hands will be on the toothbrush as well. And toothbrushes kept in restrooms are exposed to fecal coliform from airborne particles.

How to Clean Your Toothbrush

The first step is to rinse the toothbrush with hot water. However, do not use heating devices such as microwaves or dishwashers; hot tap water will suffice. Next, pour some antibacterial mouthwash into a cup – enough to completely cover the head of the toothbrush – and soak the head of the toothbrush for at least two minutes. Be sure to discard the mouthwash used for soaking instead of trying to reuse it. If antibacterial mouthwash is not available, consider using denture cleanser for a one-minute soak, hydrogen peroxide for two minutes, or a UV-C sanitation device for the time specified by the manufacturer's instructions.
